Much later Selma again played an important role in history, the freedom movement or civil rights movement was intently focused in the south. March 7, 1965, known as “Bloody Sunday”, approximately 600 civil rights marchers departed Selma on U.S. Highway 80, heading east. At the bridge they were met by state troopers, beaten will billy clubs and subjected to tear gas.
